Course Description

This course is designed to teach California law and professional ethics for marriage and family therapists.  The course will examine statutes, regulations and significant case decisions impacting the practice of counseling.  It will examine cannons of professional ethics adopted by various counseling-related professional associations, and explore the significance of professional statements in relation to the law.  Discussions will also cover the role of personal beliefs, values, and practice considerations in the context of being licensed professional.  Specific subjects include therapist roles and responsibilities, confidentiality and its limits, legal privilege, boundary crossings and violations, and cultural competency.
