Dear Students, Faculty & Staff,

 I hope you are all doing well. The library continues to adapt to the needs of its students and faculty.

First, the News.

  1. The SCS Library was awarded a SCELC grant to purchase a scanner that is easier to use than the copy machine. This will make it easier for us to scan and email you copies of requested reference articles, book chapters, commentary passages, and magazine and journal articles.
  2. SDCC and SCS Libraries are intentionally purchasing e-books this summer. I won’t have the final numbers until the end of August, but I estimate there will be between 400-500 new e-books in biblical studies, Christian ministry and theology available for use in the next two months.
  3. There is a new 7th edition of the APA Publication Manual. I will have an updated student guide to APA and paper template loaded on the Writing Center website by fall. If you continuing to study in Behavioral Sciences, you may consider buying the new edition at this time. Here’s more information about APA Style: https://apastyle.apa.org/

COLLECTIONS

Library research is always a challenge. More so now that access to print collections has been restricted. However, the SCS Library continues to provide access to thousands of e-books and journal articles through its online collections. In last year’s library annual report, it was reported that the library had access to 39,203 unique full text journal titles and 479,181 e-books through purchase, subscription, or open access in 125 research databases.

It’s best (generally) to search for e-books through the Library Catalog: https://sdcclibrary.on.worldcat.org/.  Limit by Format: ebook.The Research Databases: https://library.sdcc.edu‌/research-databases include multi-discipline databases and subject specific, like Biblical Studies/Religionand Psychology.

Requesting SCS Print Materials

As restrictions in the county lift, we have developed a policy to safely make the print collections available to students and faculty. While the library building will continue to remain closed, students and faculty will have 3 options for obtaining print material owned by the library (it’s a closed stacks model): (1) request and “curb-side” pickup, (2) mailing, or (3) scan and email chapters, reference articles, or commentary passages. Requests will be filled in 2-3 days. If you request items from SDC, expect delays (we don’t do daily deliveries now).

Option 1: “Curb-side” Pickup

  1. Place items on hold through the library catalog and indicate in the “Item description(s)/Notes” field that you want to pick them up. * Need to setup your account? See below.
  2. The requested items will be pulled, checked out, and bagged.
  3. You will be contacted about a pickup day/time.
  4. The labeled bag will be placed outside the library on the book return box for pickup on an agreed upon day. Drive clockwise around the fire lane to access the library building.

Option 2: Direct Mailing

  1. Place items on hold through the library catalog and indicate in the “Item description(s)/Notes” field your mailing address. * Need to setup your account? See below.
  2. The books will be pulled, checked out and mailed to the address via USPS using “Media Rate.”
  3. You will be responsible for paying return postage or you can drop them in the library’s book return, just outside the library entrance (see below).

Option 3: Scan and Email

  1. Request that a chapter in a book, a passage in a commentary or an article in a reference book be scanned and emailed to you.
  2. Submit your requests to me via email. Subject line: Material Request, Scan and Email
  3. The request will be filled in 2-3 days.

Returning Library Books

The book return box (just outside the library entrance) has been reopened.

  1. Drive clockwise around the fire lane to access the library building and its book return.
  2. Returned items will be retrieved every few days from the book drop and checked in (using recommended safety precautions).
  3. You will not be charged overdue fines for items checked out during the COVID-19 lockdown.
  4. If you don’t feel comfortable returning your books directly to the library, you can send them via USPS. Send to: Seminary Library, 2100 Greenfield Drive, El Cajon CA 92019. Use “Media Rate”; it’s slow but it is the cheapest option for books.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Print items borrowed. The book return box (just outside the library entrance) is open. When you have a chance, please return your ILL books into the book return. We are returning all ILL’d books. We are currently not accepting ILL requests for print books because there are not enough libraries open and staffed. Academic and public libraries across the nation are facing similar conditions.

Periodical ILL available. Some libraries are willing to send scans and so we can fill some interlibrary loan requests for book chapters and journal and magazine articles. The delivery date will be longer than the usual 2-3 days.

LIBRARIAN HELP

Even though I am working from home, I have remote access to my work computer; so, I have at my fingertips all of files, templates and programs I would have in the library. I am also working with your faculty to create or update LibGuides for your courses to help you with your research papers. I am monitoring my SCS email. I have Zoom for reference interviews—it’s almost like sitting in the chair in my office. Please, do not hesitate to contact me; I will enjoy helping you.

Communication is key. I am available via email and Zoom to help you research, write and format your papers. Daytime and evening appointments are available.

Library Research Guides, How-to Videos, etc.

For help using these resources, we have created videos that demonstrate how to use the library catalog generally and e-books specifically, as well as how to login to all e-content: https://library.sdcc.edu‌/tutorial-videos. There is also a guide to the various databases you have access to.
