COMMENCEMENT

Hello, SCS family, and welcome to our 70th Commencement Ceremony! Here you will find all the information you will need to help you plan accordingly for our upcoming graduation festivities weekend this coming May 3rd & 4th, 2019. This upcoming two-day celebration will be a wonderful time to give glory to God, to honor our graduates and their family and friends, and to thank our SCS faculty, staff, leaders, and donors. We hope to see you all there!

WHEN & WHERE

Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 10:00 am, Shadow Mountain Community Church (SMCC) Worship Center (see 2019 Graduation Map and Directions, labeled #1), 2100 Greenfield Drive in El Cajon, CA 92019

STUDENTS

Plan to arrive by 9:00 a.m. (to get situated, for parking, photos, or any last-minute instruction/reminders, etc.)  and assemble at the SMCC Worship Center RAMP (see 2019 Graduation Map and Directions, labeled #2). From here you will connect with the faculty line and then march together to the Worship Center for the ceremony. Your guests should go straight into the sanctuary and be seated. Tickets are NOT needed for the Commencement, so invite everyone you want to have there. 

FACULTY/STAFF/GUEST SPEAKERS

If you are participating/walking in the ceremony, please plan to arrive by 9:00 a.m. (for parking, photos, any last-minute instructions/reminders, etc.) with your regalia at the SMCC Worship Center Family Library, Room A (see 2019 Graduation Map and Directions, labeled #5). This will be your staging area, the room adjacent to the worship center. We will have you all line up in the lobby around 10 minutes before the 10am ceremony.

RECEPTION

There will be a reception Immediately after the Commencement Ceremony and this will be held at the Lower Campus Chapel (also known as the LCC building, see 2019 Graduation Map and Directions, labeled #4), the building across the north side entrance of the Worship Center. Family and friends will join their graduate students here and enjoy some hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and refreshments. This will be a good time to catch up and thank professors, and take some family and friends photos.

PARKING

Parking for both days is available on the campus parking lots of Shadow Mountain Community Church on both the east and west sides of Greenfield Drive.  Street parking is also available (see 2019 Graduation Map and Directions, labeled ‘Visitor Parking’). Parking is free. Arriving early will make parking easier on you and your guests.  There is handicapped parking.

REGALIA

All graduates who will be participating the Commencement Ceremony must wear their SCS regalia. Caps/tams, gowns, tassels, and/or hoods will be ordered based on the information you provided on your graduation petition. Regalia will be yours to keep.

ETIQUETTE OF WEARING REGALIA >>

SCS Regalia:

  • Associate or Bachelor degree: cap, gown, tassel
  • Master degree: cap, gown, tassel and hood. Hoods are either: scarlet (Bible & Theology) or light blue velvet (Psychology) with purple and gold liner.
  • Doctoral degree: gown, tassel, hood, and black velvet 6-point tam. Hoods are either: scarlet (Bible & Theology) or light blue velvet (Psychology) with purple and gold liner
  • Military students: braided red, white, and blue honor cord
  • Students graduating with honors:
    • Undergraduate degree academic honors are signified with:
      • GOLD CORD: Summa Cum Laude (3.9 to 4.0 GPA, including other criteria)
      • SILVER CORD: Magna Cum Laude (3.8 to 3.899 GPA, including other criteria)
      • BRONZE CORD: Cum Laude (3.6 to 3.799 GPA, including other criteria)
    • Graduate and Post-Graduate
      • PURPLE AND GOLD CORD: Academic Distinction (3.9 to 4.0 GPA, including other criteria)

Regalia Pick-Up:

You may pick-up your regalia beginning Monday, April 22nd at the registrar’s office during the hours of 9:30am to 3:30pm. Your regalia needs to be picked up NO LATER than Friday, April 26th, 2019, 1 week before the graduation events. Your gown needs to be hanged to allow the folds to fall out and warm-pressed or steamed to prevent excessive wrinkling prior to the ceremony. Please contact the Registrar’s Office by phone or email to confirm a pick-up date and time. (619-201-8951 or Registrar@socalsem.edu). If you are traveling from outside of San Diego County to graduation AND will not be able to come to the campus ahead of time, please call or email the Registrar to make special arrangements.  All graduates living in San Diego County must come to the campus to get their regalia.

GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

Announcements or invitation cards are available to be ordered.  Please see the announcements price sheet and a picture of the announcement display board from our vendor. These will give you the details on what it looks like, where to order and how much they cost. This company does a wonderful job and is very fast.  (They also do the announcements for USC and Harvard!)

MAKING YOUR OWN ANNOUNCEMENTS >>

DIPLOMAS

You will receive a padded diploma cover for each degree that you have earned during the ceremony. However, your real diplomas will not be in the diploma cover. Diplomas will be mailed out or may be picked up when the student has accomplished the following:

  • Completed all required coursework with a satisfactory GPA
  • Has a zero balance on their student account
  • IF you have received financial aid/student loans: Please complete the Financial Aid Exit Counseling survey at: https://nslds.ed.gov/nslds/nslds_SA/
  • IF you are required to take RS 791: Thesis Writing, RS 892: Thesis Project, PY 920: Doctoral Dissertation, or RS 993: Has their approved thesis/dissertation bound and must provide a digital and a bound copy to the library
  • Has completed the graduating student questionnaire at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CRQQKS7
  • Has received clearance from all SCS departments.

 

REHEARSAL &

BANQUET

 

SCS hosts a wonderful celebratory banquet the night before our 70th Graduation Ceremony. The Graduation Banquet immediately follows the rehearsal. Join us for a fun night with good food and warm fellowship!

Rehearsal will be from 5:00p to 6:15p on Friday, May 3rd, 2019. Please assemble at the Shadow Mountain Community Church Worship Center Lobby. Plan to arrive 15 minutes earlier to get situated.

STUDENTS: Commencement Rehearsal is MANDATORY for those who will be walking/participating in the ceremony.

FACULTY/STAFF: If you are able and you are planning to participate in the ceremony, please join us for the Commencement Rehearsal.

BANQUET DETAILS

Two free dinner tickets are available for each graduating student, faculty, and staff: one for you and one for your guest. However, you will need to RSVP and reserve your tickets. You may invite more guests, family, and friends but extra dinner tickets will be $40 each.

Graduation Banquet: Friday, May 3, 2019 at 6:30 pm, SMCC Generations Building Event Center (see 2019 Graduation Map and Directions, labeled #3), 2100 Greenfield Drive in El Cajon, CA 92019

Each table seats 8 persons.

STUDENTS: We would like to encourage you to invite your Pastor or ministry mentor and their spouse to attend the banquet as well. This is a good opportunity to celebrate with them and thank them for their important contribution in supporting you through the successful completion of your SCS education.  Tickets would be needed for these guests.
