Ministry

Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
36 units

Available On Campus, with Online Options

The Doctor of Ministry (DMin) program is a 36-unit doctorate designed for leaders and pastors who are looking to take their ministry and career to the next level. The degree has three tracks: Christian Leadership, Christian Education, and Biblical Exposition. All tracks blend the best of intellectual pursuits with functional foundations. The program combines the best of a modified residency with a “high-touch” and interactive online component. Students are required to come to one intensive per year, lasting two weeks. The degree is run in a cohort model and can be completed in as few as three years (though the student may choose to take longer in the project stage).

PROGRAM DESIGN
The DMin program design:

1. 36 units done over three years. (Maximum length they would have to complete total program is seven years).
2. Executive-style intensive model: two-day on-campus kickoff, and cohort meets at SCS one time per year for two weeks. The rest is online through Populi.
3. Biblical exegesis based on text driven approach.
4. Merges the functional with intellectual components.
5. Innovative with technology (to harness both training and application).
6. Built on learning labs which occur online between the intensives.
7. Designed to have immediate application and impact on the student’s ministry.
8. Leadership component built on old-fashioned approach to Christian leadership, morals, ethics, and best-practices from non-profit and church management.
9. Mentorship model for students. Each student would have a faculty mentor through the process to insure that SCS is truly coming alongside the student and assisting them in ministry.
10. Designed for the adult who has experience in ministry, but wants to take their ministry to the next level.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of the Doctor of Ministry program students will be able to:

1. Conceptualize and evaluate the various contributing factors impacting contemporary Christianity, particularly as it applies to the local church.
2. Distinguish the role of culture and worldviews in the effective formulation of Christian ministry and leadership.
3. Explain the role of Biblical Theology and its contribution to a comprehensive knowledge of Scriptural truth.
4. Develop executable plans for ministry leadership and/or preaching based on sound academic research and professional best practices.
5. Synthesize major theoretical concepts within an area of academic and professional specialization.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
Basic admission requirements and application procedures for the DMin program are the same as for all graduate programs at SCS (see Matriculation section of this catalog), with the following exceptions.

1. Applicants must have at least three years of part-time (20 hours a week or more) experience in ministry and leadership.
2. Applicants must present approved college and seminary degrees. The evaluation for admission to the DMin program includes a review of the applicant’s completed MDiv (or equivalent) coursework to ensure the appropriate academic preparation necessary to pursue the DMin degree. Transcripts of this work must show a grade point average at least of a 3.0 on a scale of 4.0
3. Applicants who are determined to be deficient in their previous coursework may be admitted to the program on a conditional status subject to their completion of identified deficiencies in addition to the program requirement. On acceptance, DMin students will receive a degree plan outlining what courses and how many units will be required for their program.

PROGRAM LENGTH
The program is designed to be completed in as little as three years. However, some students may require additional time, especially during the dissertation stage. All coursework including project writing must be completed within seven years, beginning on the date of the student’s first registration for DMin courses at SCS.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Each candidate for the DMin degree must meet the general graduation requirements and:

1. Complete 36 units of the prescribed curriculum and any remedial coursework;
2. Complete a dissertation evidencing a high degree of scholarly competence.

DMIN THESIS PROJECT
Writing a thesis/project is the capstone assignment for the DMin candidate through which the student produces an acceptable piece of practical research evidencing a high degree of scholarly competence and ministry acumen. The student must obtain approval of the thesis/project subject by their advisor as early in the program of study as possible.
